Tell your friends you're a "Master Black Belt."

With job titles like Black Belt and Master Black Belt, we may not be what you expect out of GE Plastics. But behind the funky names is a serious commitment to understanding quality on a sub-atomic level. How can near-perfect quality control be built into a process? The answer is based on dissecting what is critical - from our customers' perspective. And by continually building our skills and mentoring each other, we ensure that we remain the quality experts of the company.

Perfection isn't a comparison tool - it's a goal.

We use "Six Sigma" methodology and tools to ensure quality. (Sigma is a Greek letter used to describe a unit of efficiency. The higher the rating, the lower the number of defects. Six Sigma equals a process or product 99.99966% free of defects.) As such, only the very best talent in the company is selected for Black and Master Black Belt roles. We have an enormous impact on GEP's product quality, productivity and ability to focus on what is critical to our customers. And we get recognition throughout GE for our success.

Communication and research are key.

We're in all functional areas, from Manufacturing and Technology, to Finance and Human Resources. BBs and MBBs of all functional areas translate our customers' needs into internal processes and measurements. They analyze data for insight into improvement and create systems to sustain success. We're constantly looking for new ways to measure, analyze, and improve quality. We've learned how to get comfortable with data-based decisions - even when we thought we were pretty good with what our "gut" told us.

We don't just improve on our products and services.

We also help others understand how to do it themselves. So the skills and background needed to succeed in our roles are as varied as the people themselves. Here are brief descriptions of two positions within Six Sigma:

Black Belt
BBs work on projects using the Six Sigma tools. Some examples include designing new products, improving our delivery to customers and improving a product. They help others learn the tools and coach them on using them for their own work. BBs have been promoted to manufacturing leaders, product developers, technology leaders, sourcing leaders, Master Black Belts, finance managers and information technology leaders.

Master Black Belt
MBBs set strategies and continually connect everything we do to our customers, as well as coach BBs and other leaders in our company. MBBs build their skills in these roles to go on to take big leadership roles when they're done. MBBs have been promoted to be general managers, sales leaders, manufacturing leaders (plant managers), logistics managers, HR directors, business unit leaders and product managers.

This is a great place to learn skills that are translatable for any function or field. It is the place to develop process skills for key leadership positions in GE because nothing is more valued at GE than Six Sigma quality.
