You'll be surprised at what we're working on.

HR at GE Plastics isn't your stereotypical Personnel Administration. Human Resources at GE means being a credible, visible, value-added business partner supporting and driving GE's business objectives. One of the more interesting ways we have done this is through supporting e-Business. While some HR departments in other companies are just staffing e-Business departments, GE Plastics Human Resources is busy developing e-based solutions for hiring processes, leading industry trends and web-based solutions for recruitment, and developing websites like the one you are seeing right now.

We're the partner that everyone needs.

We're everywhere. From being employee advocates to consulting with upper management leadership teams to set a vision, we lead key change initiatives. But we can only do this because (in addition to fulfilling traditional HR roles) we know the business. We know technology. And we know our customers - who are a full range of people from job seekers, to the community, to the CEO. It doesn't sound like HR, does it?

Hmmm. Looks like we've had to take the slow days off the calendar.

And we also had to throw out bureaucracy. Things are busy around here, so we try to be "boundaryless" in how we work. It's not about delineating duties - it's about accomplishing goals. We often help each other out with projects, working as a team to solve complex issues. And if the work gets heavy, we stay in and order pizza.

Everything about our business today is global, and we often conference with our international colleagues. It's an opportunity to learn how things are done differently (or the same) around the world. After all, the complexities of law and the changing face of business require us to understand the policies and practices of many countries. But it's not all work, and at the end of an extraordinary day, we head off-site and share a meal for a job well done.

You can't expect to read about HR without reading a job description.

There are three general areas of HR jobs at GE Plastics: HR Generalist, HR Specialist, and Individual Contributor/Staff Assignment. We all work together, though, so these areas have a lot of overlap. Two are profiled below to give you an idea of what we look for in the position.

An HR Generalist provides leadership, pure and simple - from executing key business initiatives that build teamwork and increasing employee involvement to driving organizational effectiveness in the work environment. Candidates for this type of position would have a BA/BS in Business, Operations Management, or Human Resources with at least 5 years of HR leadership experience and a proven track record of results. And being a good leader means being a strong communicator, so interpersonal skills are paramount.

Many of our HR Specialists are graduates of our Human Resources Leadership Program, but we also hire candidates with a BA/BS degree and 3-5 years of progressive HR experience. The HR Specialist provides support for a variety of areas, and is given the chance to master skills in a specific area. Knowledge of the Six Sigma methodology, an affinity for community involvement and positive employee relations, and a strong understanding of labor laws are all necessities. This position could be considered a launching pad to progress to an HR Generalist or Individual Contributor/Staff role.

At GE Plastics, Human Resources is heavily focused on being a resource in ways that traditional HR never imagined. And because we're constantly redefining and expanding our role, we're just as impactful to the bottom line as any other business unit in this internet age.
