No one knows as much about the internet as us.

That's because we have to look at GE Plastics through the eyes of our customers. When we help our customers grow, we help GEP grow. So we're always asking old questions and looking for new answers. What could we do to speed up the ordering process? The answer is online ordering. What can we do to increase the quality of service? The answer is live chat through our "teleweb." How can we increase the number of our customers? The answer is by looking at companies who never thought they could be our customers. How can we get an entire company behind our ideas? The answer is by assembling a team from every function - HR, marketing, advertising, technology, service, and management.

There's no room for failure.

As GEP's e-Business team, we're given a lot of resources, a substantial budget, and a lot of empowerment to make things happen the right way. GE is so large and so well-known that we must always live up to expectations. We're a new function - only about a year old - but because we're working on internet time, we've had to develop quickly. But with those demands come a simple benefit: we're always working on the coolest projects.

BYOB Tuesdays.

It stands for Bring Your Own Breakfast. Every Tuesday, we have our global QMI. So at 8:00 am, when Singapore is on the line getting ready for bed, we're in the conference room eating breakfast and leading the discussion about meeting benchmarks. We work at the speed of thought, through the internet, intranet and phone lines. Travel, while still occasionally necessary, is our last resort.

We're more than a think tank. We're a think army.

Dealing with vendors, developers, and other business units constantly puts us in the role of project manager. And because we're always asking "How can our customers work better?", we're frequently encouraging our customers to use new processes and technologies. It's not always easy - especially when they're used to a system that works pretty well in the present. But the present isn't what's foremost in our minds. And the person thinking most about the future is the Project Leader.

e-Business Project Leader
These people work in their area of expertise. For some, that's portal development. For others, it's technical development or taking care of design aspects. In all cases, creativity, delivering on time and being truly cross-functional are vital skills. Many times, the successful people in these positions aren't experts in one area, but have a broad understanding of the internet as a tool of dramatic change. They bring tools from other areas, and apply them here.

When it comes to converting the old school to the new, speed is everything. And it makes e-Business one of the most exciting areas of GEP to work in. Cool projects, high-profile networking, and doing business in ways we've never done business before are what fuel our teams.
