Kay Deguchi
GEP Tokyo, Japan
Manager, Operations/Finance

What would a consulting firm like Bain & Company have in common with GE Plastics?

The answer is Kay Deguchi, an Operations & Finance Manager in Tokyo, Japan, who joined the company in December of 1999.

"One thing I've learned already at GEP is how fast businesses can move," she points out. "Consulting firms are speedy, too, but it has a much bigger significance when you can execute a plan, rather than just recommend. You make a material impact." In addition to her consultant days, Kay also clocked in some time at the Walt Disney Company before starting at the resins plant in Japan.

What Kay likes most however is how her job puts her in close contact with hands-on operations. "After spending close to ten years in the service industry," she says, "I wanted to throw myself into manufacturing." She enjoys how her new role as manager makes an impact - by helping operation teams tie together all the details and positively affect the bottom line.

Starting off as a law major at Tokyo University (and after a few years in the working world), Kay continued her education getting an MBA from Harvard Business School. So far, she has her career path firmly pointed towards the executive horizon.

"I want to be in a position where I can make the final decisions to push a business forward," she says. "The size of the business is less important. It's the degree of freedom in making business decisions. And that's not only possible, but I know it will happen faster at GEP than at any other company."
